An Introduction To Me and My Blog

Who Is Ryan Boyle?

An Introduction To Me

Hi, I'm Ryan and I'm 19 years old. I was born and raised in County Kildare In Ireland. I'm an aspiring filmmaker looking to become a screenwriter and director. I'm currently doing a PLC course in film in Dublin!

It all started when I was really young. Couldn't tell you an exact age, but very young. I was always coming up with stories while playing with my toys and Lego. I loved making stop motion lego films. Star Wars was something that I always enjoyed but I wasn't a huge fan until 2015 when 'The Force Awakens' was releasing. They were showing all of the Star Wars films on Disney XD in the build up. This is where I truly fell in love with the franchise. Seeing the Force Awakens in cinema is an experience I will not forget. In the years Disney was releasing their Star Wars films, I was obsessed. I was playing Battlefront II every day and coming up with my own ideas for Star Wars films and series.

When Halloween (2018) was first coming out, it was a pretty big deal I'd say. The 40th anniversary of the 1978 film was creeping up and this movie was a direct sequel bringing back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode. My parents wouldn't let me watch it for obvious reasons- I was too young. Jump forward 2 years, I've been 15 for about 3 weeks now. I heard the Halloween (2018) theme on the radio. I hadn't heard since it first came out, it was stuck in my head all day so I decided to put it on Spotify on my walk home from school.

One thing lead to another, I decided to watch the film on my phone. Being 15 years old and not being used to horror films, it's safe to say that this movie genuinely shook me for a bit. I absolutely loved it though, the brutality of Michael Myers and how it affected Laurie Strode and the town of Haddonfield as a whole. The iconic theme with a new modern twist and the entire score making every scene unsettling and sending chills down your spine. I hadn't seen the original film at this point and wouldn't watch it until December that year but Halloween quickly became an obsession.

I didn't know that Halloween Kills was fully filmed and even had a small teaser trailer out at this point so I came up with my own sequel. It was once again set 40 years after the 2018 film following Allyson pregnant with her first child living in Haddonfield with her mother Karen. A somehow still alive Michael Myers comes back and reeks havoc for one final time. I've since lost the document I wrote all of that on but I hold on to some of the ideas.

I was obsessed with this film. Bear in mind I haven't watched any of the other films in the franchise, just this one. I watched the Halloween Kills trailer and it wasn't being released for just over a year, which felt like forever so I had to pass the time somehow. I watched Halloween (2018) about 5 times after, one of them being with my Dad which was a little awkward. I even made a YouTube video breaking down the 30 second Halloween Kills teaser. After all this I even got a Michael Myers mask from the film from Trick or Treat Studios and a boiler suit for Christmas.

About a week has passed since and yes- I watched Halloween 5 times in a week. I'm scrolling through YouTube and I came across a video titled Halloween (2018) KILL COUNT. This sounded very interesting so I gave it a watch. Much like watching the film itself, I was blown away by how the video was a recap of the film, the behind of the scenes and appreciating the gore and kills in the film. I thought this video was pretty cool so while I was scrolling through YouTube again later that evening I came across the KILL COUNT for Saw (2004). I had not seen the film but I decided to watch it anyway. I got about half way through before I decided that I would actually watch the film.

You'll never guess what I thought about Saw, I absolutely LOVED it. The mystery of the entire film and the intensity of the final moments blew me away. The ending twist is something I consider to be on par with 'I Am Your Father'. After this I watched the entire SAW franchise in the buildup to Halloween. I fell in love with these films and the admittedly convuluted story. I've watched the entire franchise three times now. In the buildup to that same Halloween I watched the original Scream for the very first time too, which has now become my favourite film of all time.

I didn't watch a lot more films in general until December that year. Getting in the jolly mood I watched the original Halloween, Better Watch Out and the 2020 Invisible Man. This solidified my love for horror films and I started to plan watching full horror franchises when the new year rolled around. At the same time I discovered an app called Letterboxd where you can rate and review movies and I thought that it was the coolest thing in the entire world and I instantly became hooked.

Just so happens that the second covid lockdown was put into place which gave me so much more time to watch films. I watched the entire Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street franchises in one month, followed by Chucky, Texas Chainsaw and Scream in Februrary.

While watching these films- to put it simply, I realised I wanted to make my own. There was something so special about the goofy 80's slasher flicks that I really fell in love with and I wanted to create my own movies and bring my own ideas to life. In February I also watched the Before Trilogy aswell as La La Land and a ton of other non horror films that helped me create my own ideas outside of horror.

To this day, I'm still watching films mostly every day. As I've said I'm currently studying film for a year in Dublin. A fun fact I really love is that I had my first day in college 4 years to the day I watched Halloween (2018).

I have a lot of other passions and interests too. I'm trying to learn how to play guitar again. I've always wanted to play the iconic rock n roll riffs, I just don't get as much time because of college. I always listen to music wherever I'm going. I grew up in a house of classic rock like Queen and Led Zeppelin.

That's all I have to say about myself and how I got into films. But what is this blog? It's a brain dump really. I'll be reviewing new films, talking about old ones, tv shows, gaming and music. It's just me talking about my interests! Hope you enjoy what I have to say and I'm excited to hear what you think.
